Using your debit card to make purchases this holiday season might seem like a good idea especially when you consider all of the perks banks are promising with them, like keeping track of all of your purchases or using one card instead of carrying around large amounts of cash. However, unless you are keeping track of how all of those authorization holds are affecting your balance, you could be subject to mounting overdrafts in your account. So, here are some helpful hints on how to best use your debit card this holiday season while avoiding overdrafts in your account.

1. Make a budget of how much money you would like to spend. Treat your debit card like cash and only spend within the limits of what cash you have available.

2. Make a list and check it twice. Make sure you keep a written register of all of the purchases you made with your debit card and deduct them from your available balance. The main problem with using debit cards is that some people don't keep track of how many purchases they are making and how these purchases are affecting their available balance. Bank balances only include the available balance of the items presented at the time you are checking your account, So, if a transaction comes in after you check your balance like a forgotten check or electronic payment, your available balance will not be accurate. Remember, you are the one in charge of the transactions in your account.
